Studio Photoshoot for a Fun Dog Themed PR Campaign

Commercial dog photography

I’m delighted to share this fun photoshoot that I was recently commissioned to shoot for Preply online language school. The client wanted to shoot a range of different dogs against a white studio background to produce a set of digital assets that could be used by their in-house designers to create composite images for a new PR campaign they will be launching.

I sourced the dogs from my dog model database, and presented the client with the range of available models. The dog model database is open and free to join, and with over 100 dog models to choose from there is a very wide range of breeds, sizes and abilities. When pet owners book me for a private pet photoshoot, their dog is automatically added to the database. I primarily work with pets, and am very used to working with different levels of training and ability.

We shot the images in my garden studio, using my in-house studio lighting and backdrop. I have created the space specifically for working with dogs. They are free to wonder in and out of the studio as they please, and I ensure that each dog gets to run around the garden and sniff the ground between each image. I find this activity is vital for ensuring that the dogs are calm and happily engaged in the work.

The client wanted to create a set of images featuring single dogs, and a group shot of the dogs. Shooting the dogs against a white background and then arranging them together digitally allows for each dog to remain comfortable and calm. Taking a live photo of a group of dogs together is perfectly possible, but there needs to be considerable time and space allocated to ensure that each dog is comfortable. Not all dogs want to be in close confines with another dog!

Once the shoot had wrapped, I edited up all the useable images and sent them to the client on a contact sheet gallery. The client then chose the final files for retouching and final delivery. My editing and retouching style is light and natural. I like to keep the dog looking natural and relaxed, but tidied up and clean. The final file delivery entirely depends on the needs of the client, but in this case they were delivered as png files with a transparent background.
